Tel# 210 824 4918 bentong15@yahoo.com Monty和他的夥伴 Monty的車子 2018/1/27 During my military career at the beginning of 1957 I was assigned to the United States Military Advisory and Assistance Group (MAAG) in Taiwan. I was quartered in the hostel located on Yung Ming Shang also known as Grass Mountain. My duties were the chief Dispatcher for the bus section of Taipei Base Command. The busses were driven by Chinese soldiers from a transportation Battalion assigned by the Chinese government. The busses were used to transport the US personnel to and from their job assignments in the Taipei area. Also to transport the dependent children to and from their home to the American school. The road to the mountain was a two lane road with many sharp dangerous curves. During the summer when the cherry trees were in bloom many people would travel up the mountain to enjoy the scenery. The public busses were loaded. People would ride bicycles and walk on the road. During that time the government would change the road to one way up and return on the other side via Bei Tou to the city. I had my own car a four door sedan. Often time when I drove from the hostel into town I would give a ride to people walking along the road. One day there were two gentlemen walking along the road. I stopped to give them a ride. As they were on the driver’s side of the car they entered the back seat. I was happy that they both spoke fairly good English. They introduced their self and gave me their name cards. One was Mr. Yen K Hong .The other was Mr. Lin(I have forgotten his first name .However I called him Big Lin)They got off in Bei-Tou to go to the sulphur spa. One Sunday morning I was in my room in the hostel when the clerk from the front desk knocked and said that I had an incoming call at the front desk. When I answered it was Mr. Hong calling from his Office. He asked if I had time to come there for a get together. I told him that I would come there in an hour or so. Mr. Hong was employed by HO TAI Trading Company. Perhaps one of the largest in Taiwan at that time. Its headquarters was located adjacent to the old Taipei Railroad Station He was Chief of the grease And oil Department. Before I proceed farther I must clarify something. In this writing I will refer to Mr.Hong as “friend Hong” but he and his family mean much, much more than that to me. MAAG personnel celebrated both American and Chinese holidays. This was ideal for both Friend Hong and me. On each occasion he would plan a trip to visit different agents outside of Taipei. I enjoyed this because I could see different parts of the country, learn the culture and savor the foods. We would visit the agents in villages or small town during the day then go to the large city in that area where there a hotel to spend the night (No HILTON hotels..Smile) Hong left HO TAI and established his own grease and oil company. LONG FU HONG Inc. Of course he encountered many up and downs in doing so but he prevailed. When my tour of duty with MAAG ended I sold my car to a Chinese citizen. This gave me quit a sum of New Taiwan Dollars. I asked Friend Hong to keep them in his safe until I converted them to US dollars. Before I converted the NTD to told friend Hong to take what he needed for his company. He took a small amount. I had two older brothers , an older sister and three younger brothers. I am number four. My number one brother and number five and six brothers served in World war number two. I and Harold,the youngest;who you know, are the only ones to serve until retirement. both my parents and all of my sibling have passed away. I'm the only one living. 註: Monty在我剛唸小學時回美國,我聽父親說過,Monty行前賣車子收了一張支票,需票要兌現,他請父親陪他去銀行幫忙處理,領到錢後,他只留一部份,把四萬元推給父親.告訴父親他用不到,要幫忙父親作生意.父親離職時和泰公司的黃烈火先生給他一筆一萬多元的離職金,但隨著生意的成長正有捉襟見肘之愁,這筆錢猶如雪中送炭. 後來我唸三年級時,Monty再來台灣旅遊,住在長安西路(承德路轉角）的信洲飯店,爸爸才把這錢還給他. Monty的信裏提到了這一段,覺得非常溫馨與感恩. DATE:2018/8/3 2018/7/11, Monty寄來用打字機打的資料,是一些他個人經歷的略表, 我整理成excel, 其中部份我用敘述方式簡介如下: Monty於1925/3/23出生在德克薩斯州聖安東尼市,有6個兄弟姊妹,父叔輩參加過一次世界大戰,而兄弟在二戰期間也都被徵召上戰場.Monty唸完中學後,1942/5/15入伍,受完訓後就被派到英國服役,當時正是歐戰方酣德國氣燄高漲之時,1944/6/6諾曼第登陸,盟軍大舉反攻,Monty的部隊在1944/10/3也越過海峽在法國登陸,加入比利時戰場. 1944/10/29他們從德國西北邊亞琛市的Richterich攻入德國戰場,一直到1945/4/30歐洲戰場結束.12/28回聖安東尼休假後,年初回到在愛爾蘭-多尼戈爾(Nara,Ireland)的部隊,1945/8/6與8/9廣島與長崎原子彈爆炸,8/15日本隨即宣布投降,Monty也隨部隊駐札到日本神奈川縣的座間市,蘇聯在日本投降前幾天對日宣戰,並立即占領北朝鮮,Monty在南北韓戰爭前夕,又來到韓國釜山,之後在韓戰期間幾度來去韓國與日本. 1956/1月Monty被調到加州的陸軍語言學校學習了一年的中文,然後在1957年元月被派到台灣台北的美軍顧問團.
